A year ago I took a course analyzing how nations are constructed. Back then, I left Taiwan with more questions than answers. This trip helped piece together some answers to those past questions while also adding new ones. Most of all, I was invited to witness what community/family feels like in a small village in Kaohsiung. I was able to listen to the passionate story of an individual who found identity in America and continues to fight for that identity in Taiwan. I saw that the backbone for any community is how you care for those who cannot take care of themselves, the young and the old. In the end, I’m left with the echo of a question, “Is Taiwan a country?” It should be.
